The Sierra Community Theatre board invites movie-lovers, businesses and organizations to be part of its 2017 winter fundraiser, the third annual Classics Week, slated for Jan. 27 through Feb. 2.
Featured movies include Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman; Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, one of Gene Wilder’s best-known movies; and Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
The movies will be shown at no charge with sponsorships from individuals, businesses and community groups. Suggested sponsorship levels are $50, $100, $200, $300, or “Set Your Own”. Any amount will be appreciated and will be acknowledged on-screen that week. Tax-deductible donations can be left at the theatre in specially marked containers or mailed to Sierra Community Theatre, Att: Treasurer, PO Box 346, Jefferson, IA 50129.
Donations over the cost of the movies will go toward the purchase of an additional popcorn popper to keep up with peak demands and allow for maintenance of the 30+ year-old popper currently in use.
Sierra Community Theatre, a non-profit 501(c)3, was formed to take ownership of the 1880s building and save the privately-owned Fridley Sierra Theatre from closing. A successful community fundraising campaign in 2012 enabled the volunteer board to purchase state-of-the-art digital and 3-D projection and sound equipment and continue daily showings of popular and first-run movies. In 2016 the board was pleased to show eight first-run films and a total of 37 different movies.
